Appreciate the Little Things ♡

We really truly need to learn to appreciate the little things... flying kites, blowing bubbles, drawing with chalk on the sidewalk... because society, or whatever you call it, is truly (without knowing) ruining simple pleasures for us subliminally. We do not need the newest technology, phones, toys, or the like to have fun, be happy, and feel a love for life. When we learn to appreciate the little things and all of sudden we realize how much time and money we have wasted lusting after material objects that truly only bring a false sense of happiness. I am sure you have heard this lecture before ;-) but it is always effective to have reminders from time to time. I know it for sure helps me :-) Until next time friends, Live. Laugh. Love.

Think Someone Is Crying Wolf...

Think again!
It doesn't matter if one claims the consequences the first time they are tried or the hundredth, at some point people walk away/follow through.
Remember this the next time you think you are getting away with something, or someone is crying wolf.
Someone is always watching/following through.
Be true.
Be respectful.
Be loving. Until next time,
Live. Laugh. Love.

Easy, Delish Veggie Soup

Hello there :-D

I picked up some great organic squash at Costco and just had to use them in a soup!
Per my norm I only have approximate measurements :-P but if you are like me, you do not usually follow recipes to a tee. Sop fun to add your own twists and to season to taste :-D

Anyhooooo here we go,

1 Yellow Squash
1 Green Squash
1 Red Pepper
1 Red Onion (do not remove seed & skin)
2 Handfuls of Baby Carrots
1 Can Diced Tomatoes
1 Can Tomato Sauce
3/4 Container of Vegetable Broth
1 TBSP Minced Garlic
2 Palms of Thyme (Palm = I use the palm of my hand as a measurement tool ;-) )
2 Palms of Rosemary
2 Palms of Oregano
2 Palms of Hot Paprika
2 Palms of Pink Salt
2 Palms of Ground Pepper
Pinch of Sugar

Put all whole Veggies into food processor. I did not puree mine - almost, but not pureed. Some chunk left ;-)
Put all into a big pot and bring to boil. Stir. And bring down to a simmer until veggies cooked, stirring occasionally.
Serve with Rice, Noodles, or Fresh Bread.

Product/Company Review : Scentsy

Scentsy is one of the most popular Scent companies around, it seems like. I know many who sell and use their products. With my new Non Toxic Living Journey I wanted to know what was in their "melting" products as most scented candle products out there are laden with harmful/toxic ingredients.
When I decided to research this company it was sort of a side project that I wasn't in much of a rush to investigate. From what I had heard from friends & ads, Scentsy products were supposedly safe... well my research went a little further and with the holiday season upon us, and with that all the holiday/cold & flu scent products, I decided it was time to get this research done.
One of my first stops was the Scentsy Website. Right away I noticed 2 HUGE Red Flags (in my opinion);
They use Petroleum Byproduct Waxes - the leftovers from processing oil and the like. These products are not only environmental toxins, they are human toxins. Some may say they would rather recycle …

When you're worried things won't work out...

Take a deep breath in through your nose.
Exhale through your mouth.
Acknowledge your worries, feelings, emotions, and if applicable the situation and/or people.
As you acknowledge things, work on accepting the present situation for what it is, accepting that you have no control over the future, and accept all of your feelings/emotions and similar.
Acceptance is not always easy so you may have to repeat the process multiple times.
Stay present. Don't live in the future. Don't live in the past.
Let go of the worry. The fears. The what ifs.
Deep breath in. Deep breath out.Other things to try:
Calming teas
Hobbies (distract your mind - be present and mindful of hobby you are doing.)
Go for a Walk
Take a Bath/Shower
Listen to Music - Sing & Dance
Call a Friend * With all of these try to remain present. Be in the moment. If showering focus on what you're doing, be mindful. If you find your mind wandering to ruminations/worry t…

Product Review : Matrix Biolage Cleansing Conditioner

We were visiting friends in Steamboat Springs this weekend. When we got there my girl friend showed me a conditioner she bought her daughter and asked me (knowing I am researching products and the ingredients in them) if the product was any “good”.
The product is Matrix, Biolage Cleansing Conditioner for Curly Hair. The front of the bottle says Non-Stripping, No sulfates, No parabens.
Kind of makes you feel warm and fuzzy about buying the product. Makes you believe it is a safe product…

(P)MS - we hate it too!

Right now I hate everyone, and would love to just poke everyone in the eye... lol
(Pre/Post) Menstrual Symptoms are no fun for us or those who get to live, work, and deal with us during this monthly time frame.
For myself personally, I have irregular cycles - has been this way since I was about a Freshman in High School. Back then I essentially had non stop cycles. I would finish one, and then within days to a week would start another. Physically & Mentally Exhausting!
Docs put me on birth control to regulate my periods. Problem back then was the estrogen in the birth controls on the market made my Bipolar Symptoms worse.
Fast forward to the Depo Provera Shot coming out on the market. No estrogen :-D only have to get it every 3 months. Don't get a period.... yes please!
I was lucky and didn't have the nasty side effects. The shot worked effectively for me. When the information came out that the shot could cause bone density loss, my docs and I decided to give my body a…

Company (Product) Review: Norwex

Good Morning! :-)

Have you heard of Norwex? I had not until I started seeing someone post about it in a Facebook Group I am part of. The person who posted uses the cleaning products, and being someone who also does housekeeping, I was curious about the products as she said they are non toxic/all natural...
They claim to be Safe, Toxin Free, Harmful Chemical Free, and the like, yet do not openly disclose their ingredients. I searched and...
I do not have 1 particular product to review here. Rather I am going to share the only products I could find ingredients for; The ingredients that are Harmful, Toxic, Allergens, Not Proven to be Safe, Non Essential (and generally requires other non essential ingredients for product to work effectively), Environmental Impacts or the like. These ingredients are in Bold Type.
*** I found these ingredients via a Norwex Consultants Website: You normally have to contact Corporate for any answers/information according to her site. ***

Product Review: Meyers Clean Day Hand Soap

Well hello there :-)

I chose this product as it is one of the many that markets itself as all natural, non toxic, non harmful, etc.

All we have to do is look at the ingredient label to find out the truth.

(I do put my 2 cents in, but am trying to stick to the facts as much as possible.)

Come be an ingredient detective with me :-D ;-)

The first ingredient that sticks out to me is Fragrance.
Fragrance is a HUGE red flag for Ingredient Detectives like us.
"FRAGRANCE can be legally hidden in hundreds of ingredients in “fragrance” or “parfum”: a “trade secret” in the industry. More than 75% of the time if you have fragrance, you have legally hidden phthalates (THAL ates), known endocrine disruptors, that are linked with birth defects, breast cancer, infertility, liver, cancer, diabetes, obesity, and now with autism and ADHD in pregnancy by Dr. Philip Landrigan, Mt Sinai, Children’s Environmental Health Center." - Ava Anderson Non Toxic
Even though they tell you on their in…

Product Review: ItWorks Relief

I researched this product on a whim. A friend posted about it, how much she loves it, and out of curiosity (being someone with Arthritis among other Chronic Pain Conditions), I started researching each ingredient... not going to put my 2 cents forward and will only give you the facts.

First Issue is the statement on the product page: Made with All Natural Ingredients.
It does have a few, but it is not an All Natural Product. Do not be fooled by marketing ploys!

(H)armful, (T)oxic, and (Q)uestionable Ingredients:

Active Ingredients
(Q - why are they using Glucosamine 2KCL?)
Glucosamine 2KCL... is the less concentrated version of the Glucosamine family. Glucosamine HCL averages a glucosamine concentration of 83%, where as 2KCL only averages a concentration around 75%, and has a higher Salt/Sodium Content than HCL.
Due to 2KCL being sourced from Shellfish and similar many can not take 2KCL. Glucosamine HCL is made from vegetables.
As well, there is much higher risk of negative side ef…

Product Review: Flintstone Vitamins

Hello there! :-)
...on our Facebook page I have shared this photo a few times...

It scared me before when I just knew Whole Food Nutrition was the healthier option, but now that
my Healthy Living Journey involves researching Ingredients (even more then previously) I wanted to share some information from By Design Living that is pretty eye opening. ...They did a lot of my ingredient research for me haha

Here we go:

Aspartame is known to damage the brain at any dose. For this reason it is classified as a neurotoxin. Does that sound good for your child? It has also been linked to both lymphoma and leukemia. When ingested, aspartame converts into toxic methanol and formaldehyde – yes, formaldehyde (WTF?). How aspartame is allowed in so many food products by the FDA is beyond us. Something is very wrong with that! In short, check ALL food labels for aspartame. For these reasons and more, aspartame should NOT be part of a child’s daily vitamin!

Folate and Folic Acid

With all the misinformation going around, here are some facts for you:

"We’ve recently received a number of inquiries regarding folic acid, an important ingredient in Juice Plus+ capsules and chewables. These inquiries appear to have been caused by two things: 1) media attention about a genetic mutation that affects the metabolism of folic acid, and 2) an increase in the number of self-proclaimed “experts” who have taken advantage of this media attention to spread much confusion and misinformation on the subject. This post is designed to provide you with factual information to help you answer these kinds of questions from your prospects or customers. Our message is simple, clear, and supported by solid science: that folic acid has many important health benefits; that folic acid is a safe ingredient; and that people with MTHFR mutation should not be concerned that taking folic acid is harmful. About folate and folic acid Folate and folic acid are two forms of the same water-solu…

Sober Fun

Summit County was recently rated the drunkest county in Colorado... meh

Anyone who lives here will admit it, and most are (sadly) proud of it.
As someone who has chosen once again to not drink on a regular basis I have "lost" many friends. Most here just do not know how to do anything with out alcohol. One of those closest to me is a recovering alcoholic and one of his biggest issues with being sober is that he does not know how to enjoy anything without being drunk/drinking. It saddens me.

A girl friend of mine suggested Sober Events, and I thought it was a great idea! But unfortunately the excitement over the idea ended at me...

Why is it so many need alcohol (or drugs) to have fun?

I do not think we will ever have a conclusive answer. As it goes with issues of the heart or the mind, it varies person to person.

But this is not really where I want to go with this post. What I wanted to do was suggest Sober Fun.
Above you see a pic with some ideas... I want to continue t…

Product Review: Bath & Body Works Magnolia and Clementine

With my new non toxic living endeavor I have been doing a lot of ingredient reading. One of the first products I chose to do this with is the lotion I use every time I shower - Bath & Body Works Magnolia and Clementine Ultra Shea Butter Body Cream. I expected to find some of Ava's 18 Toxins to Avoid, but what I didn't expect was to find toxic ingredients not even on that list. There were a total of 29 Ingredients.
7 were Safe/All Natural :-)
6 were Iffy :-/
16 were Toxic Ingredients :-( 16 out of 29 Ingredients were Endocrine Disruptors, Carcinogens, or another form of Harmful/Toxic Ingredient. It took me a couple of hours to research all 29, but now I am glad that I did!!! I shared this and the ingredient research during a Wellness Wednesday Event I hosted on Facebook. Feel free to check out all the info and links there: Well, though I have loved my B&B Works Products since my early teenage years, it is time t…

Fundraiser for Summit Middle School SPED Department & Mental Health Services

My son has Dyslexia.
School has been a struggle since he began his academic career. He has been bullied due to being on an IEP, and in turn has struggled with depression, and has not enjoyed school between struggling to learn & dealing with kiddos who do not understand and judge him/are mean to him.
Well he is now at Summit Middle School, and for the first time he likes school! :-D We had our first IEP Meeting and I almost cried due to how passionate they were (and how proud they were of my son) - Ryder feels successful in school for the first time! AND he has not dealt with bullying at this school! :-D
We are just so happy with the SPED Department & his teachers and support staff, and we are just so ...thrilled about the Mental Health Services offered through the school (during school licensed therapists take time out of their busy private practices and work in the middle school with the kiddos in need), that we felt the need to give back somehow...
And here we are :-)

Yesterday was Bipolar Awareness Day

Bipolar Disorder is no fun for the person with it, or for those in the Bipolar Person's life.

Since I normally share my experiences here today I am going to stick to "the facts". Try to educate others about the disorder.

Here we go...
Bipolar Disorder The Mayo Clinic Definition:

Bipolar disorder, formerly called manic depression, causes extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). When you become depressed, you may feel sad or hopeless and lose interest or pleasure in most activities. When your mood shifts in the other direction, you may feel euphoric and full of energy. Mood shifts may occur only a few times a year or as often as several times a week.

National Institutes of Mental Health:

What Is Bipolar Disorder?

A Testimonial about Whole Food Nutrition

A dear friend from high school contacted me one day about Juice Plus+. She told me she had taken it during her pregnancy, that her son had become a picky eater, and asked if I could help her get them started on Whole Food Nutrition (again).

This women is someone I look up to. She is the type of women most of us look at and "wish we could be like her". ;-) When I heard her JP+ success story I just had to share it with the world!

So without further adieu...

Lori's Juice Plus+ Story
So my JP story first began while I was about 6 months pregnant with my son.  It was clear he was going to be huge, as my belly was growing rapidly. I was often tired, and felt like I needed more food but literally didn't have room to fit it. Otherwise it was a pretty smooth sailing pregnancy. I started taking JP and I instantly felt like I wasn't in a fog all day long, I wasn't dragging, and I felt healthier as well which made me feel better about baby being healthier :) Baby …

Nutritional Recovery Help

My friend is a recovering alcoholic and the only things getting him through all the physical withdrawals is cannabis (edibles, drinks, and smoke), hydration, sleep, and Whole Food Nutrition. The main one being the Whole Food Nutrition; he said when doesn't take it he feels horrible!!! Not that he doesn't feel like crap, but the pain, shakes, nausea, etc are no where near as bad as they were before he started taking Whole Food Nutrition Trio Capsules from Juice Plus+. I made him this smoothie the other morning as eating during recovery is hit or miss. Sipping on a smoothie through out the morning gets nutrition into him without making him nauseous. (The pic is of the little bit leftover that I am drinking ;-) it's delish!!!) Whole Food Nutrition is no joke!
It's not a fad diet. Its not juice. There are no gimmicks. It is simply Nutrition from Fruits & Vegetables, and even some Healthy Grains.
The products are all gluten free, vegan, nongmo, and farmedlocally.

Who and/or What is Ava Anderson?

I recently joined the AANT Team. As those who follow know, I believe in total health. That requires us to make healthy choices with every decision we make. This is not always possible due to circumstances, but the main point is that we try to make the healthiest choices we can for ourselves. The last little while I have learned about some of the harmful & toxic ingredients in our daily lives, and to put it simply, it did not make me a happy camper. Disgusted me actually that companies can get away with what they do :-/ ...and this is when I join the AANT Team... What does AANT stand for? Ava Anderson Non Toxic Who or What is Ava Anderson Non Toxic? AVA’S STORY Ava discovered, at the age of 14, the issue of chemicals in personal care products and their hazardous health effects. The more Ava researched, the more concerned she became. She started a blog to talk about where to find safer products. The market is flooded with “organic”, “natural”, “safe” and “pure”, yet there were almo…

A Dozen Reasons to Eat Eggs

If you follow you know this, but I LOVE Eggs! Breakfast is my favorite meal!!! :-D

I was contacted by a great blog site by the name of the Perch that had noticed that I blog a lot about nutrition, food/recipes, and the like and asked if I would check out a post of theirs, and if I liked it/agreed, would I please share it - well here we are ;-) I obviously approved of it hehe

This is the link to original post:

A Dozen Reason to Eat Eggs
(apologies about pics: when I resized them you could no longer read them :-P so huge they are lol)

For years, Americans have been told to avoid eggs—especially the yolks—at all cost. In the battle against heart disease, eggs have been portrayed as a villain. Yet a recent review study of 17 reports showed no increased risk of cardiovascular disease in healthy adults who eat up to one egg per day. Despite new research touting the health benefits of the incredible, edible eg…
