Company (Product) Review: Norwex

Good Morning! :-)

Have you heard of Norwex? I had not until I started seeing someone post about it in a Facebook Group I am part of. The person who posted uses the cleaning products, and being someone who also does housekeeping, I was curious about the products as she said they are non toxic/all natural...
They claim to be Safe, Toxin Free, Harmful Chemical Free, and the like, yet do not openly disclose their ingredients. I searched and...
I do not have 1 particular product to review here. Rather I am going to share the only products I could find ingredients for; The ingredients that are Harmful, Toxic, Allergens, Not Proven to be Safe, Non Essential (and generally requires other non essential ingredients for product to work effectively), Environmental Impacts or the like. These ingredients are in Bold Type.
*** I found these ingredients via a Norwex Consultants Website: You normally have to contact Corporate for any answers/information according to her site. ***

HAND CREAM: Water, Alcohol Denatured, Cocos Nucifera / Coconut Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii / Shea Butter, Palmitic Acid, Stearic Acid, Olea Europaea / Olive Fruit Oil, Isoamyl Laurate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Glucoside, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Vitis Vinifera / Grape Seed Oil, Sodium PCA, Betaine, Sodium Lactate, Xanthan Gum, Tocopherol, Helianthus Annus / Sunflower Seed Oil, Lactic Acid, PCA Ethyl Cocoyl Arginate, Parfum / FragranceLimonene, LinaloolCoumarinCitral

Food For Thought:

Water - Used to water down product. Not essential. Requires other ingredients for product to be effective.

Betaine - "As an anti-irritant, it is often used to lessen the dermal sensitization that comes along with many other ingredients." Truth in Aging
This tells us there are ingredients in this product that normally cause skin sensitivities/irritation so they use this ingredient to mask this issue.

Harmful/Toxic Ingredients:

Denatured Alcohol, also called methylated spirits, is ethanol that has additives to make it poisonous, extremely bad tasting, foul smelling or nauseating, to discourage recreational consumption. In some cases it is also dyed.

Palmitic Acid: May be derived from animals, Environmental Toxin

Stearic Acid: May be derived from animals, Environmental Toxin

Isoamyl Laurate: Environmental Toxin, and there is literally no data on it.

Cetearyl Alcohol: Limited data, Environmental Toxin

Cetearyl Glucoside: Limited date, but if not formulated properly this ingredient is a skin irritant, as well it can cause other side effects with long term use

Sodium PCA Hazard Summary:  Nitrosating agents can form carcinogenic nitrosamine compounds, on the skin or in the body after absorption, if mixed with amines.
Sodium PCA Contamination concerns per EWG.org due to Nitrosamines (Rated a Yellow 6 by EWG), also Restriction on use in regards to concentrations in products.

Sodium Lactate: The EWG rates this ingredient a moderate hazard, with cancer concerns, and use restrictions.

Xanthan Gum: There is a "fair" amount of data on this ingredient, but according to the sources I found online, we really still do not know for sure if there are harmful side effects to Xanthan Gum (in beauty products) or not.

Tocopherol: Carcinogen

Lactic Acid: Skin, Eye, and Lung Irritant, may be derived from animals, Carcinogen. The EWG rates this ingredient a moderate hazard.

PCA Ethyl Cocoyl Arginate: there is literally no data on this ingredient which is huge red flag!!!

Parfum/Fragrance: Fragrance can be legally hidden in hundreds of ingredients in “fragrance” or “parfum”: a “trade secret” in the industry. More than 75% of the time if you have fragrance, you have legally hidden phthalates (THAL ates), known endocrine disruptors, that are linked with birth defects, breast cancer, infertility, liver, cancer, diabetes, obesity, and now with autism and ADHD in pregnancy by Dr. Philip Landrigan, Mt Sinai, Children’s Environmental Health Center. (Ava Anderson Non Toxic)

Limonene: A human immune system toxicant or allergen, and is classified as an irritant. There are also developmental concerns due to use, and is a wildlife/environmental toxin. As well, it is harmful/toxic for those who work with/around this ingredient.

Linalool: This is a terpene. It is a Fragrance ingredient; a deodorant. It is a possible human toxicant/allergen. The EWG rates it a moderate hazard.

Coumarin: This ingredient is a know toxin and allergen, and it is a carcinogen. It is prohibited in the use of food (but somehow allowed in our beauty products). The EWG rates it a High Hazard.

Citral: This ingredient is a known allergen and toxin, and is rated a High Hazard by the EWG.

So out of 25 Ingredients in this supposed Non Toxic Product, there are only 7 natural, non harmful ingredients...

SHOWER GEL:  Water, Coco-Glucoside, Sodium Coco-Sulfate, Lauryl Glucoside, Glyceryl Oleate, Glycerin, Inulin, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Ananas Sativus Fruit Extract, Sorbitol, Betaine, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Glyceryl Caprylate, Citric Acid, Sodium PCA, Potassium Sorbate, Citrus Medica Limonum / Lemon Peel Extract, PCA Ethyl Cocoyl Arginate, Parfum / Fragrance, Limonene

I am not going to through all the ingredients on this one, but I did highlight the Harmful/Toxic/Nonessential Ingredients, and will provide information on the real nasty ingredients (not already described - if I do not provide description it is because there is literally no data on the ingredient, which is a Red Flag). Many ingredients in the Shower Gel you will find were also in the Hand Cream.

Glyceryl Oleate: Environmental Toxin, and a Strong Irritant.

Glycerin: They do not tell you whether this is natural glycerin or synthetic. Synthetic has been shown to pull moisture out of the skin. This ingredient may be derived from animals.

Potassium Sorbate: This ingredient is a human toxicant and irritant. There is evidence of organ toxicity. And this is already known with only limited data.

BODY LOTION:  Water, Alcohol Denatured, Glycerin, Glycine Soja / Soybean Oil, Cocos Nucifera /Coconut Oil, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, Isoamyl Laurate, Vitis Vinifera / Grape Seed Oil, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis /Sweet Almond Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii /Shea Butter, Rhus Verniciflua Peel Wax, Brassica Campestris Sterols, Ananas Sativus / Pineapple Fruit Extract, Citrus Medica Limonum / Lemon Peel Extract, Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate, Xanthan Gum, Sodium Lactate, Lactic Acid, Tocopherol, Helianthus Annus / Sunflower Seed Oil, PCA Ethyl Cocoyl Arginate, Parfum / Fragrance, Limonene, Citral, Geraniol, Linalool

Geranoil: Known irritant and immune system toxicant. This ingredient is also an environmental toxicant.

...Wow! This just shows that you always want to investigate product ingredients. Just because a company claims to be all natural/non toxic/safe does not mean they are.

Until next time folks,
Know your ingredients!
And,
Live. Laugh. Love.
