Product/Company Review: Younique
I have seen a lot of people selling Younique products online these days. They are promoted as Natural Beauty Products. Naturally this peaked my interest and I had to check out their ingredients ;-)
Younique openly admits they use Synthetic Ingredients. They claim to use only Safe Synthetic Ingredients, but as soon as I looked at their 3D Mascara Ingredient List I knew that was not all true.
Here we go folks ;-)
Moodstruck 3D Fiber Lashes
Water/Eau, Butylene Glycol, Iron Oxides (Ci 77499), Acrylate Copolymer, Stearic Acid, Polyvinylalcohol, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Tromethamine, Beeswax, Bentonite, Microcrystalline Wax, Glyceryl Stearate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Alcohol, Allantoin, Silica, Dimethicone, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Phenoxyethanol, Ppg-2-Deceth-30, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Dehydroacetate
Butylene Glycol is an Eye & Skin Irritant, and there is very Limited Data on it which is a Red Flag.
Iron Oxides Ci 77499 is classified as (High Concern) Bioaccumalative in Wildlife and Humans. As well there is concern for Organ Toxicity. It is used in Cosmetics for Color.
Acrylate Copolymer has NO Data which is a HUGE Red Flag! How can you claim it is safe if there is no information on it??? And there are Contamination concerns - it may be contaminated by these Toxic Ingredients: Methacrylic Acid, Acrylic Acid, 2-Ethylhexyl Acrylate
Stearic Acid is a suspected Environmental Toxin. And it may be derived from Animals. It is a Fragrance Ingredient.
Polyvinyl Alcohol is a Polymer of Vinyl Alcohol. This is a synthetic form of Alcohol. And Polyvinyl Alcohol is produced by the controlled hydrolysis of Polyvinyl Acetate. Polyvinyl Acetate is a harmful/toxic ingredient that can cause Organ Toxicity, and has (High) Arsenic and Heavy Metal Contamination Concerns. (http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ingredient/705158/POLYVINYL_ACETATE/) Polyvinyl Acetate is a homopolymer of Vinyl Acetate. Vinyl Acetate is another toxic ingredient (http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ingredient/724822/VINYL_ACETATE/).
Tromethamine is a masking agent, or Fragrance Ingredient. There are concerns in regards to neurotoxicity and organ system toxicity.
Bentonite, “It's best to avoid leave-on products (like foundation or night creme) containing Bentonite because they can clog the pores and suffocate the skin, disabling the normal transport of oxygen.” – Truth in Aging(.com) Bentonite can cause skin and eye irritation.
Glyceryl Stearate is highlighted as there is little to no data on it which is a Huge Red Flag.
Cetearyl Alcohol is another ingredient with little to no data. As well it is an environmental toxin.
Alcohol… why? And what type?
Allantoin is derived from Uric Acid which can come from animals or other mammals.
Silica is an ingredient that is rated anywhere from a Low Hazard to a High Hazard depending on the type of Silica. Either way, there is a hazard.
Dimethicone is an Environmental toxin, an Organ System Toxin, and (we know all of this even though) there is limited data which is a Red Flag.
Phenoxyethanol is an Eye, Skin, and Lung Irritant, there are Occupational Hazards, Organ System Toxicity, and we know all of this with Limited Data. (See the word Ethanol in the name?) It is a Fragrance Ingredient and Preservative.
PPG-2-DECETH-30 Follow link: http://www.ewg.org/guides/substances/13259 Carcinogen, Skin Allergen/Irritant, Lung Irritant (Asthma/Respitory), Developmental & Reproductive Toxicity, Environmental Toxin…
Ethylhexylglycerin is an Eye, Skin, and Lung Irritant, and is shown to cause Organ System Toxicity. It has been shown to cause Allergic Contact Dermatitis in 2 Studies.
Sodium Laureth Sulfate has high Contamination Concerns, and Eye, Skin, and Lung Irritation. It can also cause Organ Toxicity. And once again we know all of this even though there are Data Gaps.
Sodium Dehydroacetate poses Occupational Hazards, can cause Organ System Toxicity, and we really do not know much about it which is a big ole’ Red Flag. It is used as an antimicrobial ingredient and a preservative.
….So not so All Natural. And though they claim to use Safe Synthetic Ingredients, they truly are only claims. Truly sad. And not so safe.
Until next time folks,
Know Your Ingredients!
Live. Laugh. Love.
